808 nm wavelength (standard diode)
808 nm is the benchmark wavelength in laser hair removal. Its key characteristics at a glance.
Definition
808 nm is emitted by a semiconductor diode laser. It offers a balance between absorption by the melanin in the hair and penetration into the skin.
Why it is the benchmark
It penetrates deeply enough to reach the follicles without overloading the epidermis with energy. It can be used on all skin types, provided the settings are adjusted: reduced energy, longer pulses and enhanced cooling on dark skin.
In practice
The source mentions 4 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the area. White hair remains out of reach. Operation without refrigerant gas and the long lifespan of the diodes keep running costs down.
In Neocure devices
The EpilPro II is built entirely around 808 nm; the EpilPro MAX combines it with three other wavelengths.
