Non-invasive treatments or cosmetic surgery: how to advise
Your clients sometimes hesitate between a professional treatment and a surgical procedure. What each approach can offer, its limits, and a simple method for advising them honestly.
The fundamental difference
Non-invasive treatments act through intact skin, using energy (light, heat, ultrasound, cold, electromagnetic field). Surgery alters tissues directly through an incision, under anaesthesia. In between, aesthetic medicine offers minimally invasive procedures performed by doctors.
The strengths of non-invasive treatments
No social downtime and no anaesthesia, gradual results that leave time to adjust, the possibility of combining several technologies, a lower initial cost and limited risks when protocols are followed.
Their limits
More moderate changes than surgery, a limited duration that requires maintenance, several sessions, a response that varies from one person to another, and indications beyond their reach: significant excess skin, severe sagging, structural defects.
When surgery is more suitable
When the client expects a significant and lasting change, in cases of severe sagging or excess skin after major weight loss, or when there is no effective alternative (a breast lift, for example). Referring her to a surgeon is then a service you are doing her.
A method for advising
Clarify the objective and the severity. Take into account age, skin type, budget and availability. Show realistic results. Possibly offer a first session to assess tolerance and satisfaction. Remind her that a non-invasive treatment can also maintain the result of surgery, once healing is complete.
