HIFU treatment depths: 1.5, 3 and 4.5 mm

The three treatment heads of a HIFU device each target a layer of the skin. What each one brings and how to sequence them in a protocol.

Three heads, three layers

A HIFU device such as the UltraLift III has three interchangeable heads, focused at 1.5, 3 and 4.5 mm below the surface. Each one creates its heat points in a different layer, making it possible to treat the skin on several levels.

1.5 mm: texture

The most superficial head works on the upper part of the skin: skin texture, fine lines, radiance. It is often the most sensitive, as the area is richly innervated.

3 mm: firmness

The 3 mm head acts in the heart of the dermis, where most of the collagen is found. It is the basis for firming and softening wrinkles.

4.5 mm: structure

The 4.5 mm head reaches the SMAS, the fibromuscular layer that the surgeon tightens during a facelift. It is used on the jawline, jowls and neck for a lifting effect.

Sequencing the depths

A complete protocol often starts with the 3 mm, adds the 1.5 mm on areas that need smoothing, then finishes with the 4.5 mm on the jawline and neck. It can also be adapted: 1.5 and 3 mm for texture and fine lines, 3 and 4.5 mm for jowls. One to three sessions, several weeks apart, then one maintenance session per year according to the source.

Caution

The number of passes and shots must follow the protocol to avoid the biphasic effect. Leave one to two weeks between HIFU and another heat-based treatment on the same area.
