Heavy legs: technological solutions
The feeling of heavy legs is one of the most frequent requests in the treatment room. Where it comes from, what technologies offer and the advice to give your clients.
A common discomfort
Heaviness, fatigue and slight swelling of the legs, especially at the end of the day, after prolonged standing or sitting or in hot weather. Women are more often affected. The discomfort eases with the legs raised or in a cool place.
Where does the feeling come from?
Venous blood returns less well to the heart: the valves in the veins work less efficiently, the calf pump does little work in a sedentary lifestyle, and hormones relax the vein walls. Fluid builds up between the cells and microcirculation slows, hence the feeling of heaviness.
When to refer to a doctor
If the discomfort persists for several weeks, worsens, affects only one leg, or is accompanied by varicose veins, pain or redness, your client should see a doctor. A venous assessment (Doppler) makes it possible to check the condition of the veins and rule out phlebitis.
What technologies offer
Pressotherapy is the most widely used technique: sequential compression assists venous and lymphatic return, and relief is often felt during the session itself. Palper-rouler and suction boost microcirculation and complement the treatment. Work in a course of treatment, then regular maintenance sessions, as the effect diminishes without maintenance.
Advice to give
Walk, swim or cycle every day. Change position regularly and avoid crossing the legs. Sleep with the feet slightly raised. Wear compression stockings if the doctor recommends them. Drink enough, limit salt, avoid prolonged sources of heat (sauna, hot bath) and finish the shower with cool water on the legs.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy promotes heavy legs. Pressotherapy of the legs alone may be considered with the doctor's approval, never on the abdomen.
